Pheasants come into my garden regularly, they chuck to themselves when they are happy, cry out when they are startled, forage about, preen, dust bathe between the potatoes, have social bonds and moments of relaxation. Jam them in an empty wire cage and all of that stops, all those signs of contented life. So arses in tweed can feel powerful and eat a bad dinner.
